I don’t know if anyone caught the Channel 4 News last night, but there was quite a story on Arnold Schwarzenegger and his campaign against global warming in California. He has set some very demanding targets for his ‘people’ to meet - but without any advice as to how to get there!
A press conference broadcast last night showed a reporter posing this question to him, and him rattling off many things people should be targeting - but saying how he was sure people were aware of these actions, and would know they all had to pull together. But if you don’t give people who have never thought about Global Warming before a guide, such as only use energy saving lightbulbs, only boil as much water as you need, keep your tyres inflated as much as they should be - then I don’t think you can expect them to perform miracles when it comes to their energy use. Yes, of course, most of this is all common sense - but when dealing with he public - a public who sue McDonalds when they’re over weight, or who need ‘may be hot’ written on a cup of coffee - you can assume nothing. And this isn’t a dig at Americans. Or calling people stupid. It’s just that now a days, we’re a) used to having information handed to us on a plate and many come to rely on that and miss it when it’s not there and b) are often too busy to pay full attention/research things ourselves.
The report detailed how many people are moving inland and setting up their luxury homes with air conditioning and their SUVs parked outside - a lifestyle they adore and so will not thank being restricted.
There is also the fact that by the time any of this has to come to fruition, Arnie may be long gone from office - so is it all just to look good? All mouth and no trousers because he doesn’t have to be?
I’d recommend checking out the full write up on Channel 4’s website.
