Greenpeace vs. Woolies / October 1st

CFL bulbsBrowsing the Guardian archives this morning, I have just seen an article written 10 days ago about the Greenpeace demonstration outside Woolworths’ headoffice, attacking their reluctance to stop selling inefficient incandescent lightbulbs and stock only compact fluorescent (CFL) bulbs instead.

Whereas other retailers have stated they will cease stocking inefficient light bulbs by 2008, Woolworths are on target to do so by 2011.

“For each year that British retailers keep selling incandescent lightbulbs, five million tonnes of unnecessary CO2 are released into the atmosphere, Greenpeace said. Put another way, if all UK retailers moved as slowly as Woolworths, the UK would emit 20 million tonnes of CO2 unnecessarily - the equivalent to the yearly output of the entire country of Yemen.”
